The witch hunt is on and no historical figure is safe… at least, no historical figure the left doesn’t love. In the left’s push to erase history and attack any figure who didn’t possess a modern day progressive view on race, they seem to be overlooking some people. That’s because the left isn’t interested in the racist history of its own icons.
Here are some racists that the left adores. You can rest assured, no one will be toppling statues dedicated to any of these bigots.
1. Margret Sanger
Margret Sanger is a beloved figure of progressive history–a hero to feminists and liberals. She founded Planned Parenthood and advocated for women’s rights, especially their right to use birth control and have abortions.
But Sanger was also a racist and a staunch advocate for eugenics (you know, cleansing the gene pool). She spoke at KKK rallies and said things like,“the most urgent problem today is how to limit and discourage the over-fertility of the mentally and physically defective.”
And,“We do not want word to go out that we want to exterminate the Negro population, and the minister is the man who can straighten out that idea if it ever occurs to any of their more rebellious members.”
2. Woodrow Wilson
President Woodrow Wilson is revered by the left for his New Freedom platform and advancement of progressive, big government policies. Wilson set the federal government to task at regulating the economy and business.
But he was also a staunch supporter of Jim Crow segregation. Wilson brought segregation to the federal government, forbidding black Americans from using the same bathrooms as whites in government buildings. He also abhorred what he called “hyphenated Americans.” In 1914, he threw civil rights activist William Monore Trotter out of the Oval Office.
3. Senator Robert Byrd
Robert Byrd was a long serving Democrat Senator and mentor to Hillary Clinton. He was also a former KKK member and open racist. Byrd once wrote,“Rather I should die a thousand times, and see Old Glory trampled in the dirt never to rise again, than to see this beloved land of ours become degraded by race mongrels, a throwback to the blackest specimen from the wilds” — and assert the “Klan is needed today as never before.”
4. Che Guevara
Cuban communist icon and t-shirt model for hipster leftists, Che Guevara was an avid racist and bigot who hated gays and made many disparaging comments about blacks, including: “The black is indolent and a dreamer; spending his meager wage on frivolity or drink; the European has a tradition of work and saving, which has pursued him as far as this corner of America and drives him to advance himself, even independently of his own individual aspirations.”
5. Franklin D. Roosevelt
Perhaps the left’s favorite U.S. President, FDR created the modern welfare state. He also unconstitutionally ordered more than 100,000 Japanese Americans to be interned in government camps without charge or trial. If that isn’t racist enough, Roosevelt snubbed 4-time gold medal winner Jesse Owens, inviting only white athletes from the 1936 Olympics to the White House to meet him. Owens would later remark that he was given more respect from Adolf Hitler than he received from his own president.
6. Lyndon Johnson
Lyndon Johnson is held up as a champion of civil rights. He did sign the Civil Rights Act into law and smashed Jim Crow, but his racism is well documented. Johnson used black Americans for political capital. Personally, he was a hateful and bigoted man who referred to the Civil Rights Act as “the nigger bill.”
When explaining his decision to appoint Thurgood Marshall to the Supreme Court instead of a lesser-known black judge, Johnson told his biographer,“when I appoint a nigger to the bench, I want everybody to know he’s a nigger.”
Johnson also made bigoted remarks about Asians and used to keep a snake in his car trunk to try and scare black gas station attendants.
